|EAGLE SUN MASK BY SAMMY DAWSON 18SD|
|The world once lay in complete and utter darkness until Raven, through his trickery, stole the sun from a powerful chief. Raven tossed the sun into the sky, giving the world the gift of light.
Sun, a common depiction amongst the Kwakwaka’wakw, is a symbol of life and creative power. The Kwakwaka’wakw generally depict sun as an elderly man; nonetheless, he retains his impressive power.
Depictions of Sun are easily recognizable by a central face that is surrounded by rays, which are often elaborately decorated. The face commonly appears to be human; however, the image of Eagle or Raven may also be portrayed. Rays can also appear in the shape hands, a link to the creative abilities of this being.
