Store Information

The Coast Salish, prior to European contact, did not construct many of the items, such as totem
poles or a wide array of masks, which have become synonomous with the Northwest Coast.
However, they did possess a unique and ancient woodworking and weaving tradition. House posts
were often adorned with realistic animal figures, large human figures stood as grave markers and
elaborate rattles and bowls were fashioned from the horns of mountain goats. The Sxwaixwe,
which displays protruding conical eyes and bird-like features, was the only ceremonial mask
produced. Arguably, the finest examples of Coast Salish art on spindle whorls.
